How To Navigate Career Changes Successfully: A Talent Coach’s Tips

Posted on 30 October 2025

A career change in Ireland can be both exciting and daunting. Whether you are seeking growth, better work-life balance or a completely different path, understanding the essential steps can make your transition smoother.

We spoke to Sarah Mac Mullan, Associate Director - Client Services at Next Generation, who also holds an MSc in Workplace Psychology, to gather advice on how to successfully navigate this journey.

Things to Consider Before Changing Careers

1. Is It Your Job or Your Career?
Determine whether your dissatisfaction stems from your current role or the industry itself. Sometimes, a new role within your current field might be the answer.

2. Pay Cuts
Be prepared for potential salary adjustments when switching careers and fields. Consider your financial stability and whether the move aligns with your long-term goals.

3. The External Environment Matters
Sarah notes that economic conditions, industry trends and even political changes can all affect your opportunities. Some sectors like technology and healthcare are evolving rapidly while others might be consolidating.

4. Is Age a Factor in Changing Careers?
In short: Not really.

Sarah explains that purpose and passion can drive career change at any age. "Further, many industries like psychology value experience just as much as technical skill.” The key is having a support system, be it financial, a mentor or trusted friends.

How to Navigate Career Changes Successfully

1. Clarify Your ‘Why’ and Current Position
Before making any move, ask yourself:

What do I want to do now?

Where would I like to be in five years?

Why is this change important to me?

Sarah says, “Look at what you do now and what you would like to eventually do. The clarity comes from honest introspection”

2. SWOT Analysis
A SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) can help you see what you already bring to the table, your transferable skills and what you may need to develop.

Sarah adds, “Map out the steps between where you are and where you want to be. That roadmap will make your goals more achievable.”

3. Research Your Options
Explore options such as Springboard+ courses, part-time or contract roles and volunteer opportunities. Sarah highlights the gig economy as a fantastic way to test new roles, expand your network and gain relevant experience.

4. Reposition Your Personal Brand and Apply
Update your CV and online profiles to reflect your new ambitions. Effective career repositioning is key to attracting opportunities aligned with your goals.

5. Seek Support and Network Actively
Don’t do it alone. Engage with career advisors, industry experts and attend face-to-face networking events. “People connect with people,” Sarah says. “It is about the fit. When you show up in person, you build rapport that digital interactions cannot replicate.”
